These toys are so lifelike they’re almost real

An exciting venture launched at this year’s TechCrunch50 in San Francisco was by SGN, which  demonstrated how the internet and wireless technology can make a toy animal come alive. Imagine a traveling parent or a grandparent in a city far away being able to interact with a youngster through one of his or her favorite toys. That’s basically the concept of Toybots.

TechCrunch50 — whose goal is to find the best Internet start-ups and launch them in front of the industry’s most influential venture capitalists, companies and press — has an impressive track record., which was a two-person company when it won the grand prize at TechCrunch50 just two years ago, was bought this week by powerhouse personal finance company Intuit (Quicken, QuickBooks, TurboTax, etc.) for $170 million. Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal suggested that the innovative financial start-up had Intuit quaking in its boots.

The Toybots prototype came under some criticism at this week’s TechCrunch50, and ended up winning this year’s grand prize. But it you’ve ever watched Shark Tank on television, you know the brutal nature of entrepreneurial evaluation. And the Toybots technology is certainly worth watching. SGN is betting that the platform will disrupt the gaming, entertainment and toy industries for years to come. Don’t be surprised to see this innovative toy flying off retail shelves in the very near future.

In the meantime, the CEO of the Toybots made a visit to TechCrunch after the conference to show its “improved prototype” (video below). It’s all in good fun, but there’s no better place than Iwanna to find the real things — whether they’re toys or puppies.

Sex sells, even for dogs

Oh-oh. It’s back.

The “doggie love doll,” which has had various incarnations over the last couple of years, is starting to make the rounds on Twitter — probably for the first time.

The latest incarnation comes from this story (allegedly from Brazil) as reported by the appropriately named Web site “NewsLite: It Barely Qualifies as News:”

I had the idea to make this doll when my Maltese started to grab everybody’s legs,” said Marco Giroto, owner of PetSmiling. “I did some research and couldn’t find anything like it, anywhere in the world. I decided to make it!”

Advocates say it’s a safer solution than neutering dogs. On the other hand, it’s probably just good for snickering.

How cats control humans

What’s the saying: Dogs have owners, cats have staff?

According to a new study published at, that pithy saying may be truer than we think.

The new study says that cats actually manipulate their owners with a unique purr mixed with a high-pitched cry.

Earlier studies have shown the naturally irritating nature of cat meows that mimic infant cries. But the new study emphasizes the manipulative mixture of a purr within a cry.

“The embedding of a cry within a call that we normally associate with contentment is quite a subtle means of eliciting a response,” said researcher Karen McComb of University of Sussex. “Solicitation purring is probably more acceptable to humans than overt meowing, which is likely to get cats ejected from the bedroom.”

Even worse, the sly felines have learned how “to dramatically exaggerate it when it proves effective,” said McComb.

Google mows with goats

Google posted on its official blog today — picture and everything — that it has been landscaping with goats.

This spring we decided to take a low-carbon approach: Instead of using noisy mowers that run on gasoline and pollute the air, we’ve rented some goats from California Grazing to do the job for us (we’re not “kidding”). A herder brings about 200 goats and they spend roughly a week with us at Google, eating the grass and fertilizing at the same time.

Goats may be a green signal for Google and evoke a “we’re not kidding” response to folks in Silicon Valley, but for users, they are a way of life. Our users searched for goats more than 100 times last month!

Our most popular searches in April? Dogs. And tillers — a sure sign of spring in the Carolina mountains.
